The Early Years Foundation Stages (EYFS)

At Chatterbox Day Nursery, we work on the statutory framework called the Principles into Practice and this is applicable in the Early Years Foundation Stages (EYFS). We have three rooms in our nursery - the baby room, the toddler room and the pre-school room. Each room works alongside the EYFS and follows this framework, which is further based on four themes. The themes include - a unique child, positive relationships, enabling environments, and learning and development.

The principles of the EYFS

  • Every child is a competent learner from birth and can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured.
  • Children learn to be strong and independent, based on loving and secure relationships with parent/carer/key person
  • The environment plays a key role in supporting and extending children's development and learning
  • Children develop and learn in different ways and at different rates, and all areas of learning and development are equally important and inter-connected
  • In the learning and development there are seven different areas. The first three are 'Prime Areas' and the other four are called 'Specific Areas'

Seven areas of learning and development

  • Personal, social and emotional
  • Physical development
  • Communication and language
  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the world
  • Expressive arts and design

Key person to pay individual attention

All our rooms have a key person to pay individual attention to each child, speak to their parents or guardians, and reassure the child of their safety and care. The key person at Chatterbox Day Nursery normally has a limited group, enabling them to observe and manage the children more efficiently and effectively. The key person is also responsible to maintain the profile book or tracking document for each child. The parents can read it for observations and suggestions, and can get in touch with us. For children above two years of age, practitioners will write a learning and development summary which will be shared with parents, carers and health visitors.
